Transforming a High-Slit Skirt into a Modest Skirt: Option 1

Transforming a High-Slit Skirt into a Modest Skirt: Option 1

We've all been there – you find the perfect skirt with a gorgeous cut, but the high slit leaves you feeling a bit too exposed for comfort. The good news is that with a bit of creativity and basic sewing skills, you can transform that daring skirt into a modest marvel that aligns with your personal style. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the process of tailoring a high-slit skirt to close the slit, allowing you to confidently flaunt your revamped creation.

*NOTE: This Option assumes the slit requires additional fabric to close the gap. Check out our blog on Option 2 if your skirt does not need additional fabric.

Materials Needed:

  1. High-slit skirt
  2. Fabric of a similar color and texture
  3. Sewing machine or needle and thread
  4. Pins
  5. Fabric scissors
  6. Measuring tape

Step 1: Assess and Plan

Begin by putting on the skirt and identifying the area of the high slit that you want to close. Consider the desired length for the modified skirt, keeping in mind both modesty and comfort. Once you have a clear vision, mark the desired length with pins on both sides of the slit.

Step 2: Measure and Cut

Carefully take off the skirt and lay it flat on a work surface. Using the measuring tape, mark the same length on both sides of the skirt, extending from the top of the slit. Connect the markings to create a straight line. Use fabric scissors to cut along the marked line on both sides, effectively closing the slit.

Step 3: Prepare the Fabric Insert

Select a fabric that closely matches the original skirt in color and texture. This fabric will be used to create an insert that covers the closed slit. Measure the width of the closed slit and add a few inches for seam allowance. Cut two fabric panels with the determined measurements.

Step 4: Sew the Fabric Insert

Place the fabric panels right sides together and sew along one of the longer edges, using a straight stitch. Press the seam open. This creates a fabric tube. Now, fold the tube in half with wrong sides together, creating a clean finish along one edge. Press the folded edge to create a crisp crease.

Step 5: Attach the Fabric Insert

Pin the fabric insert along the closed slit, ensuring it is centered and aligned with the rest of the skirt. Sew the fabric insert onto the skirt, using a straight stitch. If you're using a sewing machine, be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seams.

Step 6: Hem the Skirt

If the original skirt had a hem, replicate it on the new fabric insert. Fold the bottom edge of the fabric insert to the desired hem length and secure it with pins. Sew the hem using a straight stitch, and press it for a polished finish.

Step 7: Final Touches

Try on your newly tailored skirt to ensure it meets your modesty goals. Make any necessary adjustments and trim any excess fabric if needed. Now, you have successfully transformed a high-slit skirt into a stylish, modest piece that reflects your personal taste and comfort level.

The END.
